First developed by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Viagra was nearly tossed into the history pages of failed medicines. It was originally designed in 1989 to help men with high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina, and was patented Viagra by Dr Nicholas Terrett in 1991. Studies of Viagra up until 1992 found it to be ineffective in fighting cardiovascular diseases. What Pfizer did find, however, was that one of its side effects was correcting erectile dysfunction, and in 1994 Pfizer started advertising Viagra as an erectile dysfunction treatment.
Viagra has been shown to be effective in 75% of men with erectile dysfunction. How a particular man responds to Viagra very much depends upon the underlying cause of his erectile dysfunction, the severity of any underlying cause and the degree of sexual arousal he experiences.
There are over 200 CHE graduates and associates that span the globe and are engaged in applied human ecology. The physical Centre, library and hub are located in the hard-pressed community of Govan, Glasgow, where we are committed to addressing the issues of poverty and loss of hope at their root. The CHE is a key partner of Govan Folk University, and sometimes collaborates with other local community organisations.
We regularly put on public talks and host popular education discussion sessions on some of the burning issues of our times.
His books include Hell & High Water: Climate Change, Hope and the Human Condition on the cultural and spiritual dimensions of climate change, Rekindling Community on the spiritual basis of inter-relationship, and Soil and Soul: People versus Corporate Power on land reform and environmental protection – the latter described as “world changing” by George Monbiot, “life changing” by the Bishop of Liverpool and “truly mental” by Thom Yorke of Radiohead.
Enjoy this video of CHE fellow Alastair McIntosh sharing the ideas contained in his most recent book.
