Sildenafil Citrate – This is the same active ingredient present in male Viagra. Studies were carried out from 2000 to 2008 to find out whether sildenafil citrate has the same effect on women as it had on women. The studies proved that indeed sildenafil citrate was useful in curing a condition known as Female Sexual Arousal Disorder. At this point, female Viagra was manufactured alongside male Viagra and it is sold in online drug stores and pharmacies in most parts of the world. Sildenafil citrate works as a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor. Phosphodiesterase-5 suppresses** the effect of a neurotransmitter known as nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is produced in the brain when one is sexually aroused. This neurotransmitter leads to widening of blood vessels that supply blood to the penis and vagina. Therefore, this hormone is crucial in sexual arousal and stimulation as it is responsible for increased blood flow to the genitals which in turn increases** sensitivity of the genitalia and makes them ready for sexual intercourse in both sexes. Nonetheless, phosphodiesterase-5 is produced naturally in the body to prevent damage of the genitalia after sexual intercourse.
It increases** blood testosterone levels. Testosterone is a steroid hormone present in both men and women that is responsible for sex drive. Increased testosterone levels increases** the libido It boosts** sexual recall It increases** blood flow to the female genitalia hence increasing** its sensitivity to touch making it easier to stimulate It increases** the intensity and the number of orgasms leading to more sexual satisfaction.
A decrease in sex drive can also originate from daily stressors, significant life events, or chronic conditions such as multiple sclerosis or diabetes.
For example, the review detailed a study that gave Viagra to 202 postmenopausal women with primary FSIAD. Researchers observed an increased amount of arousal sensations, vaginal lubrication, and orgasm in study participants. However, women with secondary FSIAD-associated disorders reported no increase in desire or enjoyment.
Flibanserin was originally developed as an antidepressant, but was approved by the FDA for treatment of FSIAD in 2015. Its mode of action as far as it relates to FSIAD isn’t well understood. It’s known that taking flibanserin regularly raises levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the body. At the same time, it lowers levels of serotonin.
Currently, Addyi is only available through certain prescribers and pharmacies. It’s prescribed by approved providers in agreement between the manufacturer and the FDA. A prescriber must be certified by the manufacturer to meet certain FDA requirements.
