So why is a drug, once linked to greying, paunchy men past their prime, now taking over the sex lives of the young and seemingly virile?
‘In just one or two generations, there has been a turnaround. Before, it was always the expectation that the man was the predator. Now ladette culture has turned that on its head. Faced with this pressure, young men bring performance fears to the bedroom long before any sex takes place.’
Performance jitters. For some young men, the desire to perform well in bed can be so overwhelming that, in turn, it causes them to not perform at all. “When a younger man experiences ED, it often is associated with significant performance anxiety, which in turn increases the problem, sometimes turning a temporary situation (i.e., too much to drink that night) into a permanent problem,” says Jerome Hoeksema, MD, assistant professor of urology at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “The more they worry about it, the worse it gets. Young men need to recognize this cycle and try to reduce the ‘stress’ surrounding sex.”
Drug abuse. “Other illicit drugs can have an effect on erectile function, too” adds Montague. “In particular, cocaine use has been linked to a condition called priapism, where an erection lasts for more than four hours. It is a painful and potentially damaging condition that requires immediate medical attention.”
"I say guys probably start experimenting with it around age 19," he said.
So why are these teenagers and 20 and 30 something man secretly taking the drug often prescribed to older men who want help in the bedroom?
